Changes at the Sumner Branch of the Pierce County Library System

I’m a heavy user of the library system. I think its one of the best uses of my tax dollars.

Edgewood belongs to the Pierce County Library System and residents can use any of the branches in the system.

Although the Milton Library is about equal-distant from my home, I generally use the Sumner Library. I always order books I want on-line. Rarely do I have to wait more than a couple of days before I get an email message saying my selections are ready for pickup. I find the library has about 75% of the books I’m looking for.

The Sumner Library was closed for a little over a month for remodeling. The changes they made were primarily procedure oriented. Now you check your own books out. Any books held for you are found on dedicated shelves in alphabetical order. Librarians now spend their time on more productive tasks. Zipping in and out of the library is now a snap and my hat’s off to them.

I mentioned above I think the library is one of the best uses of my tax dollars. I also think its one of the most underutilized community assets. I’ve read that less than one half of 1% of the adult population (not engaged in a formal education course) reads at least one non-fiction book a year. That brings to mind the adage of:

    Q. What’s the difference between someone who cannot read and someone who doesn’t?
    A. Nothing!

I encourage you to get your children interested in reading at an early age.
